CE Marking/Certification“CE” is the abbreviation of French phrase “Conformité Européene” which literally means “European Conformity”
CE Marking on a product is a manufacturer's declaration that the product complies with the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection legislation, in practice by many of the so-called Product Directives.*
*Product Directives contains the "essential requirements" and/or "performance levels" and "Harmonised Standards" to which the products must conform. Harmonised Standards are the technical specifications (European Standards or Harmonisation Documents) which are established by several European standards agencies (CEN, CENELEC, etc).
Which European Standards agencies does SAINT use?Saint’s fabrics are tested by two different European standards agencies - Dolomiticert© and Satra Technology Centre
Dolomiticert is based on Italy and Satra Technology Centre is based in United Kingdom. Saint uses two agencies as different agencies have different testing methods for CE testing to ensure accuracy in compliance with CE Certification.
What Standards and test methods does SAINT use to achieve CE Ratings?Saint’s denim meets the CE EN13595-1: 2002 professional European test standards for “Protective Clothing for Professional Motorcycle Riders”, achieving Motorcycle tested CE Zone 1, level 1 and level 2 rated impact, burst and abrasion protection.
IMPACT CUT RESISTANCE
A knife moving at 2.8m/s impacts with a 200x200m stretched piece of fabric. Results are measured in mm of penetration
IMPACT ABRASION RESISTANCE
Fabric wrapped around a heavy weight with sensor attached is dropped onto a 60 grit sand belt moving at 22m/h. Results are measured in 10th of seconds.
Fabric is fastened over a steel cylinder where a balloon is then expanded to greater than 1200 kPa. Results are measured to 50% above the relevant zone point or breaking point, whichever is first.

Difference between CE rating for armour and apparel/denimCE rating (EN 13595-2: 2002) for apparel and denim tests impact abrasion, impact cut and burst strength (see above).
The severity of injuries to the body tends to increase with contact pressure (i.e. force per unit area) hence CE rating for armours tests impact performance (EN 1621-1: 1997). The principal behind the CE testing for armours is to assess the protective qualities of body armours worn on limb joints during a motorcycle ride.
Armour reduces serious potential impact injuries by over 35%.

What is UHMWPE fibre?UHMWPE is short for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene. It is a subset of thermoplastic polyethylene.
UHMWPE is odorless, tasteless, and nontoxic. It is highly resistant to corrosive chemicals except oxidizing acids; has extremely low moisture absorption and a very low coefficient of friction; is self-lubricating (see boundary lubrication); and is highly resistant to abrasion, in some forms being 15 times more resistant to abrasion than carbon steel. Its coefficient of friction is significantly lower than that of nylon and acetal, and is comparable to that of polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE, Teflon), but UHMWPE has better abrasion resistance than PTFE.
UHMWPE fibres are used in armours, cut-resistant gloves, bow strings, climbing equipments, fishing lines and space shuttles.
What is Dyneema®?Dyneema® is the trade-name for Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE). Dyneema® is produced in a patented gel spinning process in which fibres are drawn, heated, elongated and cooled. The stretching and spinning process allows for molecular alignment, high crystallisation and low density.
How strong is Dyneema® and UHMWPE?Fashion and urban wear: Including 5-10% Dyneema® increases the abrasion resistance of 100% denim by 250-600%, tear resistance by 50-100%, and tensile strength by 25-100%.
Motorcycle wear: Using half the amount of Dyneema® improves the abrasion resistance of a single-layer motorcycle denim with aramid by 70%. The like-for-like improvement is 300%. And half the amount of Dyneema® is twice as strong as denim with HT nylon on burst/tensile strength.
How do you test the strength of Saint Apparel?Motorcycle crash tested and proven, Saint single layer apparel has a hierarchy of protection designed for different applications. Why do we use activated armours?Saint uses activated armours in our range to further protect you when things do go random.
Activated armours are used as they are comfortable to wear, slim, flexible and absorbs impact.
There are 2 different armours we use - D30 and Generic activated armours - both of which provides impact absorption protection and are certified CE level 1 or level 2.
What is D30 armour?D30 is a UK based company which specialises in impact protection and shock absorption. D30 uses unique patented and proprietary technologies to make rate-sensitive, soft, flexible materials with high shock absorbing properties that are used in impact protection products.
D30 provides a wide range of level 1 and 2 CE EN1621 certified protection armours.

How does Saint denim compare to leatherThere are two different types of leather: Fashion and Protective Leather.
Leather for apparel manufacturing are usually a byproduct of food consumption and are usually from animals such as cow, goat, sheep, lamb, pig and deer. The skin/hide goes through a tanning process to achieve different finish and colour.
This is thicker and stronger and far less flexible when compared to Fashion Leather or Denim.
As leather comes from animal byproduct, not all leather is equal and can never be. The level of protection fashion leather provides is comparable to any normal 12 oz denim. However, protective/race leather has a slide time of up to 7 seconds which is comparable to Saint’s denim which protects you when things go random for up to 6 seconds.
Most protective leather products in the market comes with a liner to provide better comfort. Saint denim has no layers or liners and provide up to the same protection level as leather.

What is the difference between Saint Unbreakable Jeans and Saint Model 1's?The fabric construction in Saint’s Unbreakable jean is more complicated and the jean is manufactured with denim containing 62% Dyneema® (UHWMPE) which provides an all-over protection jean. Model 1’s however, is constructed in a way that key impact zones such as the knees and seat use CE-1 rated denim containing 66% UHWMPE and denim containing 10% UHWMPE in the rest of the jeans.
Stretch in Saint DenimSaint Denim is similar to any raw denim in the market which means that stretch in our Saint denim is no more than normal denim. There is no elastane fibres in any of our denim construction at the moment. However, we are bringing stretch to our denim in May 2017.
Why are Saint products so expensive?UHWMPE fibres are pretty expensive to manufacture and the technology behind manufacturing UHWMPE fibres for fabrics is relatively new in the market. As UHWMPE fibres are synthetic fibres which does not absorb any kind of dyes in fibre or fabric state, the denim construction of UHWMPE with cotton was challenging to achieve the denim face you have seen in our Unbreakable range. Will i be protected in every scenario?The range of variables in any motorcycle crash means that no protective clothing can protect in all possible scenarios.
Can alterations be done on Saint gear?Yes, like any other garments, Saint denim can be altered to fit you better! However, not all alteration places can make this happen. A pair of sharp scissors and heavy gauge needle(s) are essential for making alterations to any of our Saint Denim. Please visit your local tailor and if you thay have any specific questions - we are here to assist!
What are the recommended care instructions for Saint apparels with UHWMPE?UHWMPE fibres are extremely heat sensitive and chemically inert. The melting point for UHWMPE is between 140-144ºC therefore it is not recommended to expose the fabric to temperatures higher than 130ºC even for short periods of time (seconds). Even though UHWMPE fibres are chemically inert (which means it resists almost any type of chemicals), it is not recommended that Saint denim to be bleached or dry cleaned to prevent quality issues related to the cotton fibre in the denim.
