CE Ratings Explained: What AA and AAA Actually Mean


Walk into any motorcycle shop and you will see the same words on every hangtag. Abrasion resistant. Reinforced. Protective. None of them mean anything on their own.

What does mean something is a CE certification, because it represents a garment that was sent to an accredited laboratory, destroyed under controlled conditions, and given a result.

Here is how to read it.

The standard: EN 17092

EN 17092 is the European standard for protective motorcycle clothing. It replaced the older EN 13595 standard and it is the benchmark used across the industry.

Garments are tested for three things:

  • Abrasion resistance. How long the fabric survives against a moving abrasive surface before it breaks through. This is the headline test and the one most closely linked to real crash outcomes.
  • Seam strength. Whether the seams hold when the garment is loaded. A fabric that survives a slide is useless if the seam next to it opens.
  • Tear and impact resistance. Whether the material resists propagating a tear once damage starts.

Garments are also assessed on ergonomics, restraint and dimensional stability. A garment that rides up and exposes your hip during a slide has not protected you regardless of the fabric.

The classes

EN 17092 splits into classes, each with its own sub-standard.

Class AAA (EN 17092-2) is the highest level of protection in the standard. It is intended for garments offering the highest abrasion and impact resistance. Traditionally this meant one-piece leathers and heavy touring suits. Textile and denim garments achieving AAA are a relatively recent development and require serious fabric engineering.

Class AA (EN 17092-3) is a high level of protection suited to a broad range of riding. It is a genuinely strong result and covers a large share of quality road gear.

Class A (EN 17092-4) is a lower level, intended for lighter garments and lower-risk use.

Classes B and C cover garments that provide abrasion resistance without impact protection (B) and garments that are impact protector holders only (C).

The key point for buyers: AAA and AA are both serious certifications. A is a lower bar. B and C are not full protective garments in the way most riders assume.

Armour is certified separately

This catches a lot of people out. The garment class and the armour rating are two different certifications.

Impact protectors are certified to EN 1621-1 for limb protectors such as knee, elbow and shoulder, and EN 1621-2 for back protectors.

  • Level 1 transmits a lower average force than the threshold under test.
  • Level 2 transmits less force again, offering higher impact performance, usually with more bulk or a denser material.

Coverage matters too. Type A and Type B refer to the coverage area of the protector.

So a garment can be Class AAA with Level 1 armour, or Class A with Level 2 armour. The two numbers describe different things: how the fabric handles the slide, and how the armour handles the hit.

What CE ratings do not tell you

They do not tell you about fit. A AAA jean two sizes too big will move on your body during a slide, shift the armour away from your knee, and expose skin. Fit is the single most under-rated variable in gear performance.

They do not tell you about comfort or heat. Test performance and wearability are separate. The gear you actually wear beats the gear you left at home.

They do not tell you about wear over time. Abrasion resistance degrades with damage, heat, harsh washing and age. Certification is a test of a new garment.

They do not survive a crash. Any garment that has been through a slide should be inspected and replaced. Armour compresses. Fabric is weakened in ways you cannot always see.

How to read a label properly

When you pick up a garment, look for:

  • The specific class, written as a class letter and the standard, for example CE EN 17092-2:2020 Class AAA
  • The armour standard and level, for example EN 1621-1:2012 Level 1
  • Whether armour is included or sold separately, and whether the pockets are adjustable
  • Where the protection actually sits when you put it on

If a product page says "CE rated" without naming a class, treat that as marketing rather than a specification. The class is the information.

Where SA1NT sits

Two weights, two different certifications, both real. The 14oz gives you the highest class in the standard. The 12oz gives you a lighter, cooler garment at Class AA. Choose based on your riding, your climate and your tolerance for weight.

The bottom line

Look for the class, not the adjective. Understand that garment certification and armour certification are separate things. Get the fit right, because a certification cannot help a garment that has moved off your hip.

Then replace it after a crash. It did its job once.
